Sciatica is a painful condition characterized by pain that radiates along the path of the sciatic nerve, which branches from your lower back through your hips and buttocks and down each leg. Typically, sciatica affects only one side of the body and can range from a mild ache to intense, debilitating pain.
Sciatica is usually caused by a herniated disk, bone spur, or spinal stenosis compressing part of the nerve. The compression creates inflammation, pain, and often some numbness in the affected leg. Key characteristics include:
Sharp, burning pain that radiates from the lower back down the leg
Pain that worsens when sitting
Potential weakness, numbness, or tingling in the leg or foot
Symptoms that can vary in intensity and frequency
In this video, practice a muscular approach to the treatment of this condition. Starting from a standing position, try some gentle trunk exercises. Transition to supine pelvic tilts, gentle hip isometrics, side-lying calisthenics for the hips using a band, supine hip flexion variations, abdominal work, and glute strengthening exercises. This gentle video will help you analyze where your muscular system is failing so that you can manage this painful condition and get back to life with no passive stretching!
