Thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS) is a term used for a group of disorders caused by the compression of nerves, veins, or arteries as they pass through a tight passageway between the collarbone and topmost rib to the arms. The compression of these structures results in a range of symptoms, including neck, shoulder, arm, and hand pain; numbness and tingling sensations; and arm and hand weakness, among others.
In this video, we start with integrated isometric positions and calisthenics to improve our range of motion, while offsetting our neck and shoulder compensation. Using a TheraBand, we will practice some essential shoulder exercises that move the clavicle, scapula, and humerus. We will also work on thoracic (mid-back) extension. Next, experience some upper body strengthening exercises using the dumbbells for chest, shoulders, arms, and back in seated, standing, prone and supine positions. A chair will be incorporated for support.
At the end of this routine, you should feel more relaxed with less pain and tension. Isometrics also bring down blood pressure and help make the involved joints more stable. *Refer to TOS Shoulder Solutions and TOS Shoulder Solutions II for progressive exercises.
